Wandelen in the Zillertal – The Most Beautiful Routes

Over 1,400 kilometres of marked hiking trails make the Zillertal one of the most versatile hiking regions in the Alps. From gentle strolls along the valley floor to scenic alpine meadow walks and challenging summit tours across more than 80 three-thousand-metre peaks – everyone finds their perfect route here.

The Olpererhütte – Austria's Most Famous Photo Spot

No hike in the Zillertal is as famous as the ascent to the Olpererhütte at 2,389 metres. The iconic suspension bridge above the turquoise Schlegeis reservoir is an absolute Instagram hotspot. The hike starts at the Schlegeis reservoir and takes approximately 1.5 hours. Start early in the morning to avoid crowds – the car park is accessible from 6 am.

The Berliner Höhenweg – For Experienced Mountaineers

The Berliner Höhenweg is considered one of the most beautiful multi-day hikes in the Alps. Over six to eight stages, you traverse the high-alpine landscape of the Zillertal Alps, stay overnight in traditional mountain huts and experience nature at its purest. The total distance is around 70 kilometres with over 6,000 metres of elevation gain. A challenge rewarded with unforgettable panoramas.

💡 Insidertip: The Wildgerlostal from Finkau is a hidden gem for those seeking spectacular waterfalls and untouched nature – less known than the Olpererhütte, but equally impressive.

Gezin and Theme Trails

The Zillertal offers numerous trails designed especially for families. The Tuxbach Avontuur Trail, the Schmankerlweg near Gerlos, and the Hubertus Wildlife Path combine nature experiences with playful learning. Pushchair-friendly paths are mainly found around cable car stations – in summer, 11 mountain railways operate to make the ascent easier.

Best Equipment and Preparation

Sturdy hiking boots with profiled soles are essential – even on seemingly easy paths it can be slippery. Bring enough water (at least 1.5 litres per person), sun protection and a rain jacket. Weather conditions in the mountains can change quickly. Check with the tourist office or a mountaineering app each morning for current conditions.

"Wandelen in the Zillertal means discovering a new valley, a new summit and a new panorama every day. It never gets boring."

Zell am Ziller is an ideal starting point: the Rosenalm cable car takes you to 1,760 metres in just minutes, from where numerous hikes begin. Das Lisa'l is just a few minutes' walk from the village centre – perfect for putting your feet up after a mountain tour.
